Who Controls Our Internet? Cloud, Power, and Public Values
The recent move by SIDN (the foundation managing the .nl domain) to Amazon Web Services may seem technical, but researchers from the University of Amsterdam warn it touches the core of our digital sovereignty.
In their report Clouds Over the Netherlands, the researchers argue that commercial cloud platforms can undermine public values, leading to loss of control, expertise, and democratic oversight. They call on policymakers to prioritise public interest over profit and to invest in alternative, open internet infrastructure.
The message is clear: it’s time for true digital sovereignty.
